Hello

Hello, I'm Kayla Heglin. I am a clinical practicum student supervised by Alma Henry, LISW. I hold a Bachelor of Science in Psychology from Upper Iowa University and am currently pursuing a Master’s in Social Work at the University of Iowa, working towards my Licensed Master of Social Work. My professional journey has provided me with extensive experience in helping individuals reduce recidivism and support their long-term recovery from substance use. Additionally, I have worked with individuals dealing with trauma, depression, and issues specific to the LGBTQIA+ community.

My passion for becoming a therapist stems from a deep desire to create positive change within the community and make mental health care more accessible to those in need. My goal as a

therapist is to help individuals find their voice, overcome trauma and societal pressures, and empower them to discover and embrace their true selves.

Areas of Interest

In clinical practice, I have primarily worked with adults but also have experience in community-

based settings with children aged five and older. My areas of specialization include:

• LGBTQIA+

• Childhood trauma

• Trauma & Resilience

• Parenting

• Depression

• Anxiety

• Substance Use

• Peer and Martial Relationships

Approaches

I am committed to creating a safe, non-judgmental environment where clients feel heard,

understood, and valued. I respect and embrace diverse worldviews, socioeconomic statuses,

cultural differences, religious affiliations, and gender identities. My approach is collaborative

and personalized, drawing from various techniques tailored to each client's unique needs and

preferences. These techniques include cognitive-behavioral therapy, mindfulness practices,

solution-focused brief therapy, creative expression, and narrative therapy. My goal is to support

clients on their journey toward healing, confidence, and empowerment.

About Me

Outside of my professional life, I am a mom of three and enjoy spending time outdoors and

exploring nature. I cherish open conversations and love hearing people's stories, often striking

up conversations with strangers. Before entering the field of social work, I was a certified

personal trainer, fostering a love for fitness and the confidence it builds within individuals.
