Educational Background: Graduated from Iowa State with a MS in Family and Consumer Science & Clarke University with a BS in Psychology
Background & Experience:
started working in a community care center(nursing home)
then moved to large residential facility (for people with intellectual, physical and behavioral diagnoses) before opening and transitioning many of the residential folks to community group homes.
Then moved on to teenagers with a myriad of issues - autism, behavioral issues, legal issues and those who had been removed from abusive homes.
Worked in LGBTQ student services office providing education campus wide on issues impacting this community including class panels - facilitating and being a member, safe zone project, Matthew Shephard vigil, and positive recognition to self-identified students on campus for campus advocacy.
volunteered with Des Moines' first LGBTQ youth group (prior to the advent of GSA's) providing a safe space for youth under 25 to be themselves, meet others and talk about specific issues they faced at home, at school and in the community.
worked at the YESS shelter
Worked at several agencies that addressed mental health issues and comorbid issues with people from 5 to 70.
Worked as a Special Education Associate for Ankeny
Self-advocacy and management of mental health for those over 25 years old.
